This notebook is a continuation of N-18-07-02. It was used by Edison in July 1918 in connection with his work for the U.S. Navy during World War I. Many of these notes were made in or near the garage at Glenmont, Edison\'s home in Llewellyn Park, New Jersey, where he was working with John A. Hanley, William A. Hayes, Sherwood T. (Sam) Moore, and other employees on a series of experiments pertaining to the measurement and detection of sound under water. Included are tests with various devices used to pick up and amplify the sound of dripping water, possibly as a way of compensating for the interference experienced in listening to a sound detection device as it was towed behind a moving vessel. Other tests involve simulated submarine sounds. Among the components employed are brass and rubber tubes, telephone receivers, microphones, reverberators, and audions. Some experiments involve sounds transmitted from within a large iron annealing pot procured from the Edison Storage Battery works. The experiments are continued in N-18-07-18.2.
