This folder contains correspondence relating to the business of the Automatic Telegraph Co. This company was incorporated in New York on November 28, 1870, to exploit the automatic telegraph patents of George Little. Edison became its principal inventor and developed his own automatic telegraph system that was used commercially by the company beginning in December 1872. The correspondents for 1872 include Spencer M. Clark, general manager of the American Telegraph Works; Daniel Craig, a journalist and former president of the Associated Press, who had obtained a financial interest in Little's system and wanted to develop it for press transmission; and Edward H. Johnson, superintendent of the Automatic Telegraph Co. and longtime Edison associate.
