This folder contains correspondence and other documents relating to the short-lived American Novelty Co., which was managed by Edison associate Edward H. Johnson. The company was incorporated in New York in November 1876 to manufacture and sell small inventions being developed by Edison. The only products actually marketed by the company were Edison's duplicating ink and Johnson's ribbon mucilage. In addition to the correspondence, most of which is by Johnson, there is a draft agreement in Edison's hand involving the Electro-Chemical Manufacturing Co. (successor to the American Novelty Co.), George H. Bliss, and Charles E. Hollland. Also included are several printed circulars advertising Edison's duplicating ink and Johnson's ribbon mucilage.
