In addition to letters relating to Edison's donations to organizations such as the Young Men's Christian Association of the Oranges, the selected items include fund-raising appeals made on behalf Sarah Farmer, the daughter of electrical pioneer Moses G. Farmer. Also included is a letter from Andrew Phillips of Michigan, who worked with Edison as an itinerant telegrapher in Memphis.

Less than 1 percent of the documents have been selected. The unselected letters consist primarily of requests for money. Many bear Edison's notation, "no ans."
