Description
This letterbook covers the periods July-December 1895 and November 1896-October 1897. There are also copies of two letters from 1883 regarding the Edison Telephone Co. of Europe, Ltd. Most of the letters are by Edison or Walter S. Mallory. Much of the correspondence relates to Mallory's personal affairs. Those letters pertaining to the New Jersey and Pennsylvania Concentrating Works deal mainly with personnel matters and stock transactions. Some of the items relate to company finances, labor relations, and briquette production. There are also memoranda outlining the duties of six supervisory personnel at the Ogden works and an estimate of potential yearly profits based on varying amounts of output. A few letters concern phonograph litigation, phonograph contracts, and Edison's efforts to sell his Edison-Gower-Bell Telephone Co. shares. There is also an option, in Edison's own hand, for John Savoy to purchase all rights to the Edison phonoplex telegraph. The book contains 484 numbered pages, some of which are missing, and an index. Approximately 30 percent of the book has been selected. Some of the letters are written in very faint green ink and may be difficult to read. Related letterbooks can be found in the Walter S. Mallory Papers (Special Collections Series).
