Description
This scrapbook covers the period December 1876-August 1878 and contains newspaper clippings, some printed circulars, and a few technical drawings. Most of the material concerns the phonograph, the tasimeter, and the telephone. The first part of the book relates primarily to the telephone. Included are clippings about public demonstrations of the Edison telephone, comparisons between the Edison telephone and other models, and patent controversies involving the microphone and the carbon telephone. The second part of the book pertains largely to public demonstrations of the phonograph. Included are clippings relating to Edison's visit to Washington, D.C., in April 1878 to demonstrate the phonograph before the president, the Congress, and the Smithsonian Institution. There are also articles about Edison's journey to Rawlins, Wyoming in July 1878 to test the tasimeter, reporters' accounts of their visits to the Menlo Park laboratory, and interviews with former coworkers about Edison's years as an itinerant telegrapher. The book also contains a few technical drawings of the telephone in the hand of Batchelor and advertising circulars for the electric pen and the phonograph. The spine is stamped "Scraps 1 C. Batchelor" and is labeled "1877-1878" and "#1-#867." The book contains approximately 600 unnumbered pages. The clippings are individually numbered 1-867.
