Thomas A. Edison, Esq.,
Chautauqua, N.Y.
Dear Mr. Edison:
You will remember that sometime ago Mr. Foley, Superintendent of Telegraph of the D.L. & W.R.R., talked to you about a scheme that they had in mind of train dispatching by means of telephones, instead of telegraph, and they wanted to know if some connection could not be made with the phonograph so that a record could be kept of all orders. You stated to him, as I understand it, that such a thing was feasible. They are now very anxious to know what, if anything, can be done. Did you ever give the matter any further attention, and can anything be done until you get back? Mr. Foley has telephoned to me in regard to the matter and I should like to give him some sort of a reply. Please answer on the back of this enclosed envelope.
Yours very truly,
W.E. Gilmore
