Title

[D8133ZAR], Letter from Edward Hibberd Johnson to Thomas Alva Edison, November 12th, 1881

Editor's Notes

On "The Edison Electric Light System. Edwd. H. Johnson, Manager. 57 Holborn Viaduct." letterhead; first time used I think. Full discussion of UK electric light patent situation. Sends documents wrt validity of TAE's English patents. Just read Swan's lecture in Oct. 1880 Electrician and says its just run-of-mill low-resistance carbon. Gives lengthy critique of Swan's paper and lamp; says "woefully ignorant of the value of high resistance." Says Swan will be unable to prove priority. Says Lane-Fox's "discursive but impracticable publications has limited the scope of your claims" in UK, esp wrt high resistance. Discussion of claims 4 & 5 in patent 17. "Appropos of this whole subject of your English patents, I cannot see that you have as yet profited very much by our old Telephone experience and I now renew--after the lapse of 2 years--my recommendation that you change your method & agency of obtaining your English patents." Says shld get patent agent for UK, just like Wilber in US. Unsure of course to pursue wrt Hopkinson dynamo report. Should we pay Siemens a royalty? He would prefer this instead of litigation. Danger that Siemens wld obtain an injunction just when trying to get company started. Asks why Siemens failed to get US patent. It's 8 pages, but I like it. poss select; covers UK patent situation and dynamo. dh 9dec02
