Title

[D8147Q], Letter from Jose D Husbands, Compania Chilena Telefonos de Edison to Thomas Alva Edison, May 9th, 1881

Editor's Notes

We're having trouble with the Bell telephones shipped here which I understand are manufactured under some arrangement with you. Learn from Eldred that the Natl Bell Tel Co of Boston is THE one telephone co., and we apparently as supposed to make arrangements with them for instruments. Don't understand; your contracts & assignments to this company conveyed ALL your rights. Same terms applied to my recent purchase of your rights in Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia. Payment for these companies is ready but must await approval Finance Ministry's approval of the Chilean Co.s stock. Went to Santiago last week and expect authorization tomorrow. Co. will begin its legal existence & issue stock on 30 May. Discusses agents of Bell Co. and "the Morgan mob" who have opposed Co., recently obtained few carbon transmitters and are placing them in service and "laugh at our privileges." We've had to raise our rental rates because of currency depreciation since paying you, and rivals are cheaper. Company has decided to hold your money here until legal situation with respect to Bell instruments and Chilean infringers is more clear. Must we deal with Natl. Bell Co. (not fair to do so) or rely on your contract to supply all insts without royalty. Co. will not release your shares to you until this question settled. Gives instructions for coded cable replies.
