Title
[D8239C], Letter from William Thomson (Lord Kelvin) to Edward Hibberd Johnson, January 2nd, 1882
Editor's Notes
[copy enclosed with D8239B] Will be glad to see you in Glasgow, making efficiency tests of dynamos with 6.25HP gas engine. Want to test Edison dynamo thoroughly & will give you results or we can do it together. Resis of Siemends SD2 armature is .2 or .21 ohms; field 14 ohms; can bet 110 volts at 1200 rpm. Want to wrap armature (Siemens?) in silk threat and run to 2000 rpm; will 150 or 200 volts destroy insulation? Discusses planned tests. PS. Heard that dynamo Batch showed me in Paris is broken in pieces; would complete silk thread binding prevent such an accident? Should give splendid results if mechanical problems can be overcome.
