Title
[D8239ZDZ], Letter from William Thomson (Lord Kelvin) to Shelford Bidwell, June 3rd, 1882
Editor's Notes
[copy sent with D8239ZDY] [we'll want to refer to WT's assessment of novelty; this is quotable, but not selectable] Swan's March & April 1879 lectures reported in papers; there'd be no trouble finding proof that he exhibited lamps then. "As a shareholder in the Edison Co. I sinceely hope we shall hear no more of the litigation which was contemplated. It could not but have a most injurious effecton the interests of the Edison Co. There never was a case in which the ground was more completely covered beforehand, against a wide or general claim such as for incandescent carbon filament hermetically sealed in vacuum. It is not only what Swan did that makes such a claim untenable." Refers to published refs of Starr, Farmer, others and concludes "What else *is* left for Edison to claim except how to make his carbon filament?" Arrangements for new Swan Co were completed before I got yours expressing wish for agreement with Swan.
