- Editor's Notes
- Official (and officious) reply from board to TAE's of 12 Sept. Regarding your objection that you never estimated net cost of British lighting plant, see pg 2 of yours of 11 August. Also we enclose your *original* cost of 80 lights containing comparison with Swan's estimates. Your estimate of cost for 80 lights is wrong in several particulars: royalty to Siemens, socket prices, freight & insurance. Regarding your statement that you've had to meet with same competition in US as we have here, NY gas 3x expensive than London, easier political process for obtaining street rights there; we have rivalry from 52 companies with large aggregate capital. Lamps: don't understand charges for 10cp lamps, which didn't appear to be novel. Don't want to restrict your progress toward better lamps. We must consult with you on price before submitting large lamp orders, "and it was partly with this object that Mr. Johnson was appointed to act for the Company in New York." Send us only a few of each new kind of lamp for evaluation. Re: extra armatures and sockets: board feels justified not paying for extra articles ordered by your assistants, not officially by the Co. You should inquire before shipping this stuff. Think your assistants abused generous drawing privileges extended to you.
