Title
[D8239ZFR], Letter from Grosvenor Porter Lowrey to Edward Hibberd Johnson, October 19th, 1882
Editor's Notes
Heard that White coming to NY soon. Wright and I agree that the stronger your case, the more considerate and courteous must be the treatment of him. "Don't let us give him the slightest ground to complain that he has been maet with any predjudice, impatience, unfriendliness," etc. Tell this to TAE. "You have such unusual powers for clear and effective controversy that there is always a temptation to use them-as the possession of firearms & skill in their use is a prolific cause of manslaughter. Don't set down on Mr. White too hard! & remember the [Eaton?] maxim to "make a bridge of gold for a retreating enemy."
