Title
[D8240D], Letter from Grosvenor Porter Lowrey to Thomas Alva Edison, January 18th, 1882
Editor's Notes
[filmed as "incomplete" but document concludes on D8240D1] Dispatch from Gouraud that colonies he expects to get from Fabbri are NS Wales, Queensland, Victoria, and NZ. Fabbri about to reply that TAE will sell these for L50,000, expenses deducted before division. Fabbri will add that all TAE's contracts require expenses be repaid first, and also that he doesn't think Gouraud should have preferrence over TAE in this respect. I think you should cable Gouraud that your authority to negotiate Cape Colonies must be exercised in connection with negotiations of Fabbri's colonies, because if you don't close Australian deal with him it might be very helpful to have Cape Colonies to offer another purchaser. This is important. Also impt that you cable today "before Gouraud can claim to have done something, or have committed himself under your cable of last night."
