letterhead: "reed, lucas & co / steam, smith and fuel coal and superior coke / for furnaces and foundries / hawk's nest, WV" # has invented machine to "bore in the coal" at mines, "intended to work it with spring motor" but asks about possibility of working it by electricity, about 1 horse power, as there is power at mouth of mine, "could you furnish an apparatus that the electricity could be boxed and carried in to the machine after created outside" # TAE marg: "the electrical part is nto very practicable unless wires run through the drifts to furnish power and light from a dynamo at the hostting works"
