[D8342ZDA], Letter from Paul D Dyer to Samuel Insull, November 12th, 1883

Editor's Notes

Letterheas of Dt. Cloud hotel Canton Ohio. # The 25 light plant this place ws started up Saturday night and adter making a miserable failure was shut down again. #Story immediatley boarded the trian for Chillicothe and I went to Storys to apoloqise for the for their being left in the dark. Story says he did not have enough power and the man who is to the purchase the plant telegraophed for another engine , # This party wants me to a statement of the case to TAE to see what his opinion of the difficulty. # The dynamo is run by rotary engine which the inventor says envelopes 7 H.P, with 90 lb[?] of steam.# Friday night all th lamps were put on a test and the Engine carried the load with apprarent ease making the machine run at 1500 rev and bringing te lamps up to 20 [c.p] # We started up Saturday afternoon at 4.45 to supply light tot he stores.# The lamps came up to about 2/3 the normal candle power and nothing could be done to bring them up# The Dynamo was making 1100 revolutions and we 100 lbs. Of steam# The same engine runs the machine at 1450 rev. under the same condiotions the night before. # one of conditions of the sale of thos plant is that 4 H.P. will run the Dynamo woth 25-16 C.P. lamps on it. # Mr. Thompson the purchasee has a 12H.P, boiler and this must supply 7 H.P, of steam to the other machinery. The lamos are 800 ft. form power a #6 wire runs 300 feet and the #10 the remainder of the distance. # This incident need not spoil our chances for organizing a Central System plant Co. # If the other engine runs with but 4 &5 H.P. sauccessfully, MR. Thompson can show agood profit form his investment. HE is going to charge $25 for each lamp 4 hrs. a night 213 nights a year. # I f you think it best to express an opinion of the coause of failure I will forward t to Thompson.# He is afraid H.P. is not enough Dynaom and only has 12 H.P. boiler out of which he must get 7 H.P. independent of power for light. Marginiila by insull and posiblly TAE difficult to read written over original letter.
