Title

[D8352P], Letter from Thomas Alva Edison to Arthur B Johnson, August 10th, 1883

Editor's Notes

I have enclosed the estimate for the erection of an central station plant at Utica amounting to $72,836. I also enclose the blue print which is marked with red lines where the street mians will run # the estimate includes the equipment of the centrla stations and the feeders and street mains and houses of fifty consumers. All further connections with running the central station for a period of thirty days after the station is started, including allsupplies and wages of permanent employees and expert to teach those employees so that if you thirty days and be insures employees capable of running it after our men leave owing to instructions given by my experts. # This estimate does not cover the wiring of the houses but it does cover the expense of a expert , who will teach a local man to do the work. # Before we sign any contract with your Co. I should be satisfied that we can meet the money contract due under the contract. If they don’t submit a contract in thirty days I will think the estimate will be withdrawn. # I think the justifacation for the delay in fowarding you an estimate is in the fact that I have been able , by going over the whole matter in an exhaustive manner, to reduce the estimate to about $11,000. # The day you saw Insull, we effected the reduction of $8,000 bringing the estimate to $75,000, the amount I advised you of. Since I wrote to you we managed to effect a further refuction of about $3,000. These reductions have made mainly by a re-arrangement of the underground system. SO that you see the delay, since the position of the lot was determined on , has been soley in the interest of your Company. Signed by TAE p,s. Blue print of the ground planof the cnetrla station will be mailed tonight.
