Title
[D8535ZBN], Letter from Societe Electrique Edison, Alfred Chatard to Thomas Alva Edison, August 24th, 1885
Editor's Notes
We just received a letter from the Co. du Roal Fabrica de Facao de Thomas of Lisbon[much of the name of the Co. difficult to read], requesting an estimate for a plant of electric light to be put in their factory. According to our conventions, the exploitation of your patents in Portugal has been reserved to you and consequently this installation would be fitted up by you, but here it seems that this affair would have more probability of success if we could enter in direct negotiations with the Co., so I request you to give us the necessary authorization. We would grant you a commission of 6% on the material to be furnished and think this arrangement, as it leaves you a certain profit in advance, will convince you to accept our proposal. The profit which we will have from this will be small, and besides you must not forget that we take upon ourselves all responsibility in the matter. ##Please inform us of your approval by cable on receipt of this letter, in order to avoid any delay that might hurt our chances of success. [TAE[?] Marg]: "Edison approved if six percent of gross selling price."
