Title
[D8637ZAI], Memorandum, George E Simpson, 1886
Editor's Notes
[Lengthy discussion (10 pgs) of series motor used in connection with Van D[e Poele]. arrangement as an interference discussed in patent office letter (date missing); includes drawings]; fig. 2 shows use of machine as generator propelled by momentum of car; to use machine as a generator Van D. had to change direction of current in armature to coincide with field current. [Attachment: Notes on arrangement of motor and generator] "It is hard to see what bearing the Hopkinson method of dynamo testing has on Claim 8"; Claim 8 (Leonard) is for a method of changing from motor to generator or vice versa by reversing field magnetism; Hopkinson's article doesn't mention this. [Attachment 2: provides instructions on connecting two dynamos to determine the efficiency of machine as converter of energy as either a generator or motor, with drawing and stats.]
