"Experiment on charge and discharge of a '1' field. ## The maximum charge or discharge is at a position at right angles to the neutral [-----] when running, as it will be seen in sketch that when lines (of force) a withdraw from the amateur they and the upper part [small drawing] of the coils; and the few llines that go to the fuse -- [-] -- and the lower half developing an E.M.F. in the opposite direction for the instant, but reversing this as soon as it [----] the upper half again, their effect can therefore be neglected. ## The folowwing are the readings taken with 125 Volt charging the field, firstly the[-] [--] [--]: then tho' 25% of the field resistance, then 50%, 75% & 100% extra resistance. d=charge d=discharge. ## [Table detailing these readings.] ## The above are deflections or sing of [------] galvanometer where 100 degrees = 1 V. for a constant [------]. If the above be multiplied by 1.05 of 5% loss of[---]ring due to [---] [---] & or galo:) & divided by 2. they will give actual volts Then the mean readings give:-- ## [Table of readings.] ## The deflections after one second, that is to say the swing the galvanometer gives when the key is closed 1 second after the field current is closed or broken (on 110 Volts this time instead of 125) ## [Table of results] ## The difference between 1/3 & 1/4 sec seems to be very small, so possibly the first throw on the galvanometer is due to the action of the wire itself that is on the magnet, on the near armature wire [small drawing] or [small drawing. The readings on discharge it will be observed are not nearly constant, the fact is that it is easy to close a magnet circuit at a certaintime written 1/10 of a second, but it takes more than that time to break it because of the arc. It will be seen that the charge readings agree pretty well."
