Title

[D8818APS], Letter from Charles Batchelor to Edison Machine Works, July 20th, 1888

Editor's Notes

Enclosed we hand you sketch of two commutators, Nos 1 & 2. We sent you a pattern of the body of No. 1, and would ask you to use the casting after you have made it in making up commutator No. 1. No. 1 must be built up like a Municipal Commutator, with 240 bars. These bars can just as well be sheet brass, if they are any easier for you to make. We have drawn the tag 1 1/4 inch long, but as we have only two No. 23 wires to fasten to it, perhaps you could thin them down and bend them over, so that these wires can be soldered between. All the wires that go on No.2 commutator have to pass through the body of No. 1, so that is the reason the commutator has spokes in it like a wheel. In regard to No. 2 we should like you to keep the length of bar about the same as the drawing. The body of the commutator you can use from any of your shells, if they are large enough. This commutator has 120 bars and the tag must be so arranged as to solder two No. 18 wires to it. These commutator bars can also be made of brass, if it is easier for you to make them. # Both commutators go on the same shaft, which is 1 3/8 inches exact. If you find it necessary to make any alteration from this sketch, please notify me of it, so I can arrange it on the machine.
