Title
[D8830AAM], Letter from John H Vail to Thomas Alva Edison, May 12th, 1888
Editor's Notes
"Referring to the letter sent you some weeks ago regarding the use of motor dynamos for long distance lighting, I would state, that we have asked the Machine Works for prices on these dynamos, and they replied stating that you have advised them not to make any prices, as you have a new device which is expected to be superior to motor dynamos. ### Anything of this nature will be very welcome in our business at this time. ### We are now putting up a station in Newport, R.I. and have demand for a large number of lights in the numerous summer residences which are located from one to three miles from the station. These residences are widely scattered. Will you kindly advise me how soon this new apparatus will be ready, whether you have at the laboratory a model which I can see in operation if I come over, also whether the apparatus can be worked in multiple are on the three-wire system the same as the motor dynamos could be worked. ### There are several other places Newport where this could be applied promptly if we can get it out this season." J.H. Vail [Marginalia: "Will have it soon." E]
