- Editor's Notes
- "Enclosed I have the honor to hand you a memorial letter signed by Mr. Thomas A. Edison and various firms engaged in the electric lighting and machinery business between the United States to make the following addition to same, in consequence of receipt of letters from my firm, Frazar & Co., Japan, dated Yokohama Sept. 13th, wherein they say in regard to the PROTECTIONS OF AMERICAN PATENTS that Governor Hubbard, while not in a position legally to take any diplomatic action tending to suppress the piracy of Japanese manufactures, has, at the same time, in one or two instances, exerted by well directed efforts, influence upon the Japanese Government successfully in the suppresion of the piracy. My friends add the following to their letter;- ### [letter quoted at length] 'We beliee that the most effective way will be for our Government, if possible, to exercise a certain pressure upon the Japanese Government, through the Japanese envoy at Washington. We sincerely hope you may succeed in obtaining some security for American patents. If not absolute, then at least a royalty to american holders of patents when their rights are infringed. ### I may add that my firm in Japan act as special agents for all the parties whose names are signed to the enclosed letter. The electric portion of our business is becoming one of much importance and I shall feel greatly obliged if you will give this matter your early and earnest attention.' [end of quoted letter] ### Thanking you in advance on behalf of my firm and its constituents for such courtesy and influence exerted by you, I have the honor to remain," Your obedient servant, [unsigned]
