Editor's Notes

[TAE marginalia: "Write B. that better postpone unti lFeby meeting-say impossible to work Brnadywine ore."] "The failure to meet you when I went to Orange last, was a dissappointment to me. I am now en route to Chicago and Duluth, and I purpose making a visit to the iron ore fields norht of Duluth to see what can be done there. ### I had Mr. Jos. D. Potts of Philadelphia send you from Bamester Penna some titaniferous ore called "Brandywine ore" to see if the titanium can be [unclear] or materiall reduced. He informs me that he sent some of the richest. The separation in that case will be more difficult than if a leaner or more silicious ore was to be treated. But if you can make this ore available for blast furnace purposes I believe Mr. P. will take hold and he is a man of great wealth and influence. Dana states in his minerology that stincerite is slightly magnetic, but some of the other compounds of Titanium are not so. ### It was my intention to make another mail to the laboratory and test again the Port Henry [unclear] or with Mr. Hussey, but the say I was over there I foolishily ran for a train, became overheated and was laid up in consequence for a week. ### The Mining Engineers will meet at Buffalo Oct. 20 and in February [unclear] at New York or Phila probably. Do you wish a paper prepared for the Buffalo meeting? Please write me at once c/o Dulak Iron and Steel Steel Co. Duluth Minnesota and I will block out the left for submission to you or my return house about the 18th to you on my return home about the 18th or 20th inst. If however you prefer waiting until February- we may be able to make a formal visit to the Laboratory and share the concentration in [unclear]. If the paper is prepared it should be accompanied by as many analyses as possible. My [unclear]would be to have the paper presented in February [unclear] I will be ready to take hold of it at once. I would also like to know your news as to making the general results public." Yours truly, J. Birkinbine "My present expectation is to be at Duluth until about Sept. 8" J.B.
