- Editor's Notes
- "As I promised you, I send the resluts of the chemical analyses made from crude ore, concentrates and tailings of the Fort Henry ores tested by your magnetic separator. These are all that I have at present, but I may obtain some more at the mines which I expect to visit shortly, these I will communicate to you. ### Results of Concentration of Edison Magnetic Separator ### Mr. S. S. Witherbee, took samples in January of concentrates from a small experimental plant and found ### Phosphorus 0.30 ### Phosphorous 0.32 ### 0.31 average ### Mr. Wilkinson took samples in May 1888 at Edison's laboratory of Old Bed and New Bed ore mixed as received, which were analyzed by Ledoux & Co. ### Crushed to 10 mesh showed. Phosphorus 0.283 ### " " 20 " " Phosphorus. 0.183 ### Analyses of Port Henry ores used in experiments made by Edison's magnetic separator at Orange, N.J. May 25th 1888. In pressence of Messrs Birkinbine and Witherbees, Sherman & Co. T.R. Woodbridge, Chemist. ### [table of iron and phosphorus amounts follows] ### Analyses of Port Henry ores used in experiments made with Edison magnetic separator at Orange, N.J. May 29th, 1888, during Mr. Birkinbine's first visit after above analyses. ## [table of iron and phosphorus measurements follows] ### Analyses of ore crushed by Cornish rolls at Rockaway N.J. and separated by Edison, July 3rd, 1888, ### [table of iron and phosphorus measurements follows] ### Analyses of Port Henry iron ores, crushed and separated by Edison. ### [table of iron and phosphorus measurements follows] ### Conkling Separator ### The following analyses were reported to me as the result of a trial of New Bed Lean ore with the Conlking magnetic separator. ### [table of iron and phosphous measurements] ### The same machine passed the Mr. Sops. N.. Ore, and obtained the following results. ### [table of iron and phosphorus measurements] ### Wenstrom Separator ### Messrs Scranton & Cook supplied the following as the results which were obtained with the Wenstrom separator, Crushed to 20 mesh, Austen & Wilber analysts, Beach Glen. N.J. ore. ### [table of iron and phosphorus measurements] ### The machine is a cylinder with alternate bars of soft iron, and of wood, forming the periphery; within this cylinder and nearly touching the periphery is a wound magnet, the claim being that alternate positive and negative ploss[?] are secured. ## The ore is fed by a hopper, the magnetite sticking to the cylinder revolves with it, and drops off beyond magnetic field, the tailings falling from the face of the cylinder. ### I will come over to the laboratory within a day or two and go over results with you. ### The following is an analysis of Chataugay New York Ore separated by the Wenstrom machine. ### [table of iron measurements follows]" Yours truly, Jno. Birkinbine {PI-I think these tests are included in the joint paper TAE and Birkinbine published PA019]
