Title
[D8848ABQ], Letter from Ezra Torrance Gilliland to Thomas Alva Edison, May 24th, 1888
Editor's Notes
[letterhead of Edison Phonograph Co] "Will the changes and improvements that are being made in the Phonograph add anything to the cost, or change the price? [TAE marginalia: "Cheapen I think"] ### Is there any reason why I can't go ahead and issue descriptive pamphlets and quote selling prices at $85, nickle plated $100 and with cabinet $130? [Marginalia: "Ok do it."] ### Cabinets for typewriters retail for about $30 and correspond very nearly in size with what we will want for the Phonograph. My idea of a cabinet would be something like a small desk with a compartment at the bottom to contain the battery, and drawers at the top to hold wax blanks, etc., and a top to close down over the Phonograph when not in use. Either make the desk, or cabinet, sufficiently wide so that the typewriter can be placed on it, or have an extension shelf that can be drawn out. ### Cabinets will, most likely, be used universally in residences, and there will, no doubt, be a great many offices where they will be wanted. ### I have arranged with Jim to make us a model cabinet, also with a large, first-class furniture manufacture to do the same. ### Let m eknow if the action I have taken in this matter meets with your approval, or do you prefer attending to these matters yourself? [Marginalia: "Ok"]." Yours very truly, E.T. Gilliland "phono quantities"
