- Editor's Notes
- "The managers of the American Institue of Technology, in Boston, have been exceedingly anxious for us to give them an exhibition of the Phonograph. They applied to you direct, and by your instructions, I promised that the first exhibition in Boston should be given in the Institute. The next applicants were the Boston Electric Club, with whom I have had some correspondence, and said that we were under promise to exhibit at the Institute of Technology, but the following night we would make an exhibition at the Electric Club. In view of the recent purchase of stock in Boston, and as a means of creating a good impression on these parties, would it not be well to carry out this programme at as early a date as possible, and can't you help me out in this matter to the extent of letting me have Hamilton and perhaps one other? I think I can get Gaston and Marsh. Prof. Cross, of the Institute of Technology has volunteered to give a lecture on the Phonograph at the Institute and will probably repeat the same thing at the Electric Club. This, however, is not very important, as what they want is to see the machine, and we could take with us about six or eight machines, and with those show the music, talking, typewriting and type-setting. ### If you approve of this, I will make the dates, and then Lathrop's friends can be invited, and it will probably create a better impression on them than it would to send over an instrument and man especially to exhibit the machine to them, and possibly create the idea in their minds that they had done us a great favor in purchasing stock." Yours truly, E.T. Gilliland [TAE marginalia: "Tell Gilliland I have promised Lathrop to show it privately to Mr. Hemingway + the Forbes family + that he could arrange the week after to carry it out with the Institute I don't think I would do it before the Club--The Institute will answer + be more [unclear]."
