"I Howard John Kennard of 20 Hyde Park Terrace in the County of Middlesex Esquire hereby give Notices of my intention to oppose the Grant of Letters Patent upon application No 17175 of 1887, applied for by George Edward Gouraud upon the ground that the invention sought to be claimed thereby has been patented in this country upon applications of prior date, viz: the patent of Thomas Alva Edison NO 2909 of 1877 for 'controlling by sound the transmission of electric currents and the reproduction of corresponding sounds at a distance. The patents of James Yate Johnson now respectively 6027, 26042 and 6047 of 1886 for 'improvements in and apparatus for recording and reproducing sound from phonographic records' and 'improvements in and means and apparatus for the reproduction of speech and other sounds by means of records' respectively; The patent of Emile Berliner No 15232 of 1887 for 'Improved method of and apparauts for recording and reproducing spoken words and other sounds'; and the Patent of George Lee Anders NO 16342 of 1887 for 'Improvements in phonographic appratus for recording and reproducing vocal and other sounds'. Dated this 19th day of December 1886 H.J. Solicitors for the said Company."
