Title

[D8855AAK], Letter from Robert M Gilmour to Charles Batchelor, March 1st, 1888

Editor's Notes

"As you suggested, I submit you matter in regard to claim for extra labor while covering the steam pipes at the Laboratory as follows: ### When you kindly gave me the contract for covering the Steam Pipes connecting from Boilers to Engines, in the Laboratory there was one place viz. under the Engine room floor that we spoke of which would be a difficult place to work in, on account of the confined position of the Pipes and the intense heat radiated from same. You at the same time said you would make such provisions as would enable my men to work in this place. That is you were to put into this space an air blast of sufficient capacity to keep it cool enough for the men to work in. But owing to the unfinished condition of your apparatus at that time, you were unable to carry out the above idea, consequently at your suggestion my men had to perform this portion of the work at night commencing at about 2 o'clock in the morning after the Engines had stopped, and finish about 6 o'clock in the morning, before they commenced work again. This over time entailed upon me an expense over and above what I could reasonably charge you, but would charege you for this over time as per enclosed bill. ### Trusting the above explanation will be satisfactory to you, and accorded with your ideas I am" Very trul yours, RM. Gilmour
