- Title
- [D8856ABN], Letter from Brown and Sharpe Manufacturing Co to Thomas Alva Edison, January 27th, 1888
- Editor's Notes
- "We are in receipt of your favor of the 26" inst., and hand you enclosed herewith, blue print showing the various sizes of reamers which we use. If any of these reamers will answer your purpose, we shall be pleased to receive your order. They all taper the No. 1 Milling Machine was made with the No. 10 taper, and the Universal Grinding Machine with the No. 7 taper, we think, so that the will differ slightly. [Marginalia: "How is this? D.] ### Should you wish a reamer 1-2' taper to take the place of the No. 10, we could make it for you. The No. 10 was made a great many years ago, before the present accurate methods of measuring were devised, and we supposed it was correct. Now, we have so many machines out made with it that we cannot change without very great difficulty. ### We would advise your having standard plugs for any tapers you choose to use, as a reamer may in grinding get out of line without being noticed. We can furnish these plugs." Yours truly, Brown & Sharpe Mfg. Co. [Marginalia: "Mr. Davids This looks as if they did not keep up their own standards whilst pretending to make standards for everyone else." CB]
