Editor's Notes

An Mch 4/89 Detroit Michigan Feb. 28th 89 Friend Alva Some time ago I wrote you and sent the letter to your brother W.P to address to you and not getting any reply I wrote again and by reply see you did not get the first--##Now Alva. Im going to ask a favor and hope you will not say you can not grant it. For if you were in the same fix and I had the means would gladly help you. You know, I have been in the mail service (on same old route) almost since you left [Pt. Huron?] and in that time have saved enough to buy one lot and two houses all paid for. Two years ago this month I was taken with rheumatism and have not been able to do anything since. Had to resign my place and have all the doctors and old woman in the state [presenting?] but as yet have had no help. Can't work across the [start?]. Have had too martgage my place and now it is most due and the prospect is I will loose it. All I have got together in those years what I would ask of you is the use of ($2,500.) Twenty five hudnred dollars for a few years untill I get my health and able to pay it back. Now Alva, please don't say you can't help me in this matter. I am shure you have a great many calls. And it is only in case of actual ruin staring me in front and not able to walk that compels me to ask this favor. You are the only old friend whom I could ask and think you will give me a little help up and ou of this tight place. I will give my note and will pay it as fast as able and put under great obligations for the bal of my days. As ever your old friend James Clancy 509-3rd Ave Det##Doctors tell me I must go to [Hope?] Spring to get well, think will try it when I get means enough ahead to do so, as it is now the rent I get from my houses will only keep us and with interest and doctoring am getting behind every day
