Title

[D8905AHI], Letter from Philip Sidney Dyer to Thomas Alva Edison, October 18th, 1889

Editor's Notes

Antwerp Oct 18th 1889 Thomas A Edison Esq Orange NJ Dear Sir, In reference to my last letter regarding the residues of which I sent you a large sample the same has only been heated in order to separate the sulpher from the rest, it has gone through no other process. The same man who wants to work this wishes me to ask you whether you know of any good method to telephone from one side of a river to the other without using wires or cables as conductors. The following is a sketch of his own idea: [There follows a sketch of the river] The breadth of the River Scheld varies from 350 meters to 600 meters. The Two metal sheets on each side would be placed at a distance of 3000 meters each. Of what dimensions would the sheets have to be? Would it be necessary to have a special microphone? At what distance would the metal sheet have to be placed? Mr [Obozwieky?] wants to make a trial with the engineering corps of the Belgian Army. He would be greatly obliged to you if you would kindly give him all informations about this matter, you possibly can. Awaiting your reply I am Dear Sir Yours very kindly mr Philip S Dyer Capt J R [Kaltworth?] [name mentions: Thos Edison [J.R Kaltworth?] Philip S Dyer Belgian Army ]
