Title

[D8905AIN1], Letter from Josef Casimir Hofmann to Thomas Alva Edison, November 24th, 1889

Editor's Notes

Do you remember Josef Hofmann the boy-pianist, who was in America? That I am. Though it may seem strange to you that such a little man as I am, does annoy a genius as you are, it takes place under the impression of one of your marvelous inventions. A few days ago, I was at the Urania, to assist to a performance of your new "Phonograf." There I heard an American singer and a solo for clarinet. Involuntarily the idea took possession of me: that in this same I could also listen to my own playing! How cusious that would be, and how useful for my own musical education! Since that time, I could find no rest, till I decided to write a letter with the request, whether it would be possible to acquire such an instrument. I have some of my own savings and therefore I dare ask you for the prize of a Phonograf, and whether it could be received from your own hands? At the rest be assured that electri apparatus are my chief amusement, and I posess een twenty batteries, a telephon, and so on. I arranged in my room an electri light. I understand welll the construction of your wonderful Phonograf. Expecting you will grant the favour of writing an answer to your little admirer, I want finally to ask your pardon because of my bad english and remain Sincerely yours Josef Hofmann Adress: Berlin Potsdamerstr Noo 6
