Title
[D8923AAS], Letter from Arthur Pennell to Thomas Alva Edison, July 23rd, 1889
Editor's Notes
I accidentally made a discovery with re to the production of electro-motive force directly from a source of heat. I have not either the means or opportunity to make the requisite experiments to test the amounts of E.M.F. developed from a given amount of fuel. I think it best therefore to advise you of my discovery such as it is, and trust you to develop it; if in investigation you consider it either commercially valuable or scientifically interesting also if the [-------] that I [--] not get left entirely out. # The first test is not expensive. # Take a small cylinder of [---------] [------] such as are made by engineers to test its cohesion [--], [------] a metal cap on either end with wires leading from them, insulate and heat white hot in a bunson burner quite a respectble electric current will be isolated. # Pure hydrate of lime should, I think, [------] better. # Assuming electricity take a [----]de of motions(?) it and heat, may under certain circumstances be interchangeable. # If so, we might be working on this line to obtain a high percentage in E.M.F. of power emitted by the burning fuel, and the process should be valuable as an economist of fuel.
