Editor's Notes

[Niagra falls, N.Y] your letter of 22d received and the data desired will be immediately procured and forwarded to Mr. Adams.####It may be of interest to state that at an interview today in Buffalo with Mr. Adams, Vie Prest. Of the Brush Electric Co., he gave me the following information:--####1st, The present use of power by the several Electric Co's is as follows:--####Brush Co., 900 to 1000 h.p####Thomson-Houston Co., 500 ''####United States Co., 260 ''####2d. He estimates 35000 to 50,000 h.p as the total in general use in the City of Buffalo.####3. He states that they have one circuit of 20 miles upon which a 10 arc lamp dynamo supplies 30 full lights of 2000 c.p. each. This line has been in successful operation about two years. ####4th He fixes the loss of their motors for power at 15%. They deliver 85% of net power from their stations and collect pay for it.####5. He states that the growth of their business is restricted owing to insufficient accomodations at their stations.####They supply lamps and power off the same wire, but recommends separate lines, within the city or town, to avoid annoyancce to both classes of consumers as they frequently demand both light and power in excess of the line capacity.####7. As to cost of power to the Brush Co. in answer to the question he gave the cost of coal only, stating that to obtain the ccost of power we must figure the usual expense of handling, attendance of engine, stokers wagers &c. This, using the lowest estimates and under the very best conditions he gave, figures out $30.00 oer h.p per annum.####8. The enclosed clipping from to-day's Buffalo Courier shows trial balance of the Brush Co. which Mr. Adams stated was furnished from their books.####Please observe that their stock of One Million dollars is onw half water: so thaat the return of 3% he figures out for the public equals really 12% upon actual capital.####9. Mr. Adams further stated that he considered the electrical business as good for 8 to 10% safe earnings upon the investment which would seem to be in line with the showing of his Company.####Very Respy.,####Chas. B. Caskill####[note: illegible scribbled 5 line note]####[name mentions: Brush Co., Chas. B. Caskill, Buffalo Courier, Thomson Houston Co., Francis Lynde Stetson, Mr. Adams]
