[D8941ABI], Letter from Siemens and Halske, Wilhelm von Siemens to Thomas Alva Edison, December 6th, 1889

Editor's Notes

Berlin, Dec 6th 89 Thomas A. Edison Esq. Orange N.J. Dear Sir: Referring to your favor to Dr. on Siemens of Nov. 2nd relating to our system of electrical distribution proposed for Frankfort we would like to state, that we were aware of the danger to the lamps by a short-circuit on one of the split circuits. For preventing this danger we have constructed automatic cut-outs which are to be placed into the junction-boxes of the underground cables. A very simple arrangement of this kind is as follows: The five safety-fuses of the five conductors are together imbedded in one body of an insulating, but easily and quickly burning substance. If now two of the conductors are short circuited one or two of said fuses will melt and by so doing will ignite the surrounding substance, by the quick combustion of which an almost simultaneous interruption of all conductors is established. This arrangement works very well.##As to your proposition of rather using continuous current transformers we must say, that according to our calculations such a system becomes too expensive and therefore would prevent us from competing successfully with other systems. Yours very truly Wilhelm Siemens
