[D8944AAE], Letter from Charles Ainsworth Spofford to Samuel Insull, July 31st, 1889
Editor's Notes
New York, July 31, 1889,####Dear Mr. Insull:####Mr. Johnson was ready and anxious to close the matter of the purchase of Mr. Edison's and Mr. Villard's United States Stock. Inasmuh as the 3rd party to the agreed purchase of the 1500 shares of Sprague stock has not yet been settled with, Mr. Johnson stnds ready to pay for 2/3 of the U.S stock to Mr. E & Mr. V, as I understand him, and, at the same time, he expects to receive 2/3 of the purchase price on acount of the 1,500 shares of Sprague stock, Mr. V. is ready to carry out the transaction, nd it would have perhaps been done t-day, if Mr. E could have been reached. Will you be kind enough to see Mr. V., on Thursday, and arrange to carry out the transaction, as far as Mr. E is concerned? I suggest this, inasmuch as I leave the city to-day only to return next Sept. I will add that Mr. E told Mr. V. written a week that he was ready to up his share of the Sprague stock.####Yours truly,####CA Spofford####[name mentions: Thos Edison, E. Johnson, H. Villard, Sam Insull, C.A Spofford]
