- Editor's Notes
- Dear Sir= I take the liberty of writing you these few lines, from my own experience. I have been in the employ of the Metropolitan Phonograph Co. for a year & over, and am an expert at transcribing fromt eh Phonograph & Graphophone. Today I went on trial with a Phonograph to one of the largest bankers & brokers in the Cotton Exchange, Messrs Hubbard, Price & Co. They expressed themselves delighted at the correctness of the work I turned out, saying it was far ahead of stenographic work in accuracy, but the adjusting of the needle & the shaving of the cylinders took up so much time that they could ill afford to lose, either for themselves or their employees. If you would construct a Phonograph, with no adjusting needles, and with a cylinder on which you can make only one record, like the Graphophone, there is no doubt that the Phonograph would be used entirely for business. As it is, it takes up too much time for adjusting, shaving cylinders, etc. I was obliged to stan an hour & a half later tonight in order to shave off cylinders, & have them ready for the morning. This is a great tax on the operator and only those who are interested in the success of the Phonograph would stay as I did tonight, in order to prevent grumbling in the morning at the long delay in shaving off cylinders. I hope that what I have said in regard to the Phonograph will not come amiss, as they are really the result of a practical experience in the Cotton Exchange, and two successfully leased in this firm would usually mean 75 or 100 in that builiding alone. I fyou are not too busy I would like to hear from you personally as to what you think of these ideas. Yours truly (Mrs) A. W. Evans 151 East 31st St
