- Editor's Notes
- This p.m. I have my Japan letter [----?] -- [Tokio?] Dec 29-- Mr Lindley writes about the Phono as foll: "Mr Austin Herd is the Graphophone Agent here, actively canvassing &c&c orders, with spoken letters from the Japanese Minister in Washington, and from others now in Washington, who are well known in Japan-- This will give him an excellent introduction to the Government and our U.S. Minister Mr Hubbard, is much interested in the matter.-- So far as I can learn, this Graphophone must be simply a piracy of Mr Edisons original phonograph"--##Please read this letter to Mr E. and ask him for any suggestions as to my taking [further?] steps to obtain from the Jap Minister in Washington, the Japan Counsel General here & others proper letters to be taken to Japan & China by our expert. Have you one of the Ed. Phono. In Washington with an operator there, and could he probably get the desired letters or would Mr Edison advise my going on myself to Washingto-- It wd by necessary for the Japanese to hear the Ed machine
