- Altoona Pa Sept 5 1889####My dear Mac,####Please find attached a report of the new battery placed on the PRR in July,####Mr Gladstone asks for a report, will you please make a copy of the report for Mr Tate and file it or place it so he can see it with Mr Taylors report. Mr Tate will want it on his return, after making the opy kindly see that Mr Gladstone gets one. The Potash has used my hands in anything but an elegant manner and they are sore####Obliging Yours####W.S. Logue####[Enclosure]:####Copy of Mr. Logue's report on NEW BATTERY placed Phonoplex Circuit of Pennsylvania Railroad.####Ten cells of soda battery were placed on the Altoona and Pittsburgh Phonoplex Circuit on July 11th and commenced failing July 25th. The crystallization at the top of the zinc and carbon plates was so great that it completely filled the jar, extending downwards about two inches or more. In most of the jars the crystals were so great extended down so far that the bottom of the mines were sprung so badly that they nearly touched the jar. I noticed in these jars that the inside of the top of the zinc was so badly eaten away that the brass pin was visible. I also noticed that in several of the jars the crystals had entirely closed the mouth of the papers holding the soda; in several of the papers there still remained more soda that had not as yet dissolved. I made an effort to get the plates and zincs out of one of the jars with the crystals attached to send you, but failed on account of the remaining zinc being too heavy and broke away. We send you the box used for the ten cells, and with it a half dozen or so of zincs and plates. These will give you a fair idea of the condition of the battery it gave six volts on a voltmeter yesterday. Considerable of the paper bags had entirely disappeared. The material for the renewal reacched us in good ondition.####Altoona Sept. 5, 1889####(Signed) W.S. Logue####[name mentions: A.O.
