Title

[D8968AAG], Letter from Arthur Edwin Kennelly to Alfred Ord Tate, April 25th, 1889

Editor's Notes

Orange NJ 25th Apr 89####A.O Tate Esq####Dear Sir####The accompanying papers are suggested improvements in the economy of power. The authors say they are unable to carry out the plans themselves and offer them to Mr Edison asking in return for whatever recopense he pleases in case he adopts them.####These plans are real and practical but are not always commercial.####The first is a fan or turbine in long chimney to utilize some of the energy lost by the draft. They shew that 4% of the horsepower developed by an engine is generally available from the fluid motion of the heated air and gases in its boiler chimney.####The second is a means of increasing the economy of power in a water turbine by placing a second turbine wheel outside & concentric with a first so that the water leaving the first can be guided directly into the second. This is of course quite feasible. They claim to increase by this compounding 20% of this output of the single turbine. The only question is concerning the cost of this power compared with the increased cost of more machinery as the double turbine weigh probably three times as much as the single one. No doubt there are localities where the arrangement would pay.####The letter is written in a fair and cautious spirit. The papers are very worthy and must have cost much labor.####Yours faithfully####A.E. Kennelly####[name mentions: A.O. Tate, A.E. Kennelly, Thos Edison]
