[D8968AAO], Letter from Arthur Edwin Kennelly to Charles Batchelor, October 1st, 1889

Editor's Notes

Orange NJ, 1st October 89#Mr Batchelor##Dear Sir##We had a trial of the water ore milling machine last night which proved very satisfactory so far as the contact breaker is concerned. Not a single flash took place at the commutator although the machine now on 110 volts direct for about an hour. Unfortunately a "bug" occurred inside, at least Atwood discovered it during the run for the first h---. There is a bad cross between the magnet wire and the magnet so that a flash takes place occasionally between the pick up magnet case and the large drum. I think that at some point the high [emf?] on breaking has pierced the insulation. Atwood can find no water inside the machine so he is taking off one head. If our opinion is right about the cause of the breakdown I think it would be well if possible to insert copper sheets round every magnet slab to absorb some of the inductino and reduce the pressure. If we can only get this bug out the machine will be nearly perfect. The cams might be tapered on half as long again to let the carbon down more easily and a spring then added to pull the carbon down. Also a cheap form of carbon plate for Bunsen batteries of same thickness as the sound one now used might as J. Ott suggests be substituted with a simple to and fro hand feed with commercial advantage. Everything else goes well. Mr. English adds nothing out of the usual. We are sorry to hear that you are under treatment but hope it will be all night.##We are going to take diagrams of the Factory engine tomorrow when they cast. Yours truly A.E. Kennelly####[name mentions: Mr. English]
