[TAE Marginalia] Say that I do not think the place would suit him as I want a man merely to make routine analysis but I may be able to use him in another direction should be disregarded when I am ready E 18 Broadway Room 809 New York, Aug 3, 92 Ans'd Aug 8 1892 Mr. A.O. Tate Dear Sir: Your favor of Aug 2 relative to the position of assayer to Mr. Edison received. I may say that I have not held a salaried position for several years having depended upon general professional practice in mining engineering. I have had a wide experience in the laboratory and in the field both in this country and in South America. I will, when I return home tonight search out a few testimonials to send you. These will be from such men as Dr. Elwyn Waller, of Columbia School of Mines, Prof. Pierre de P. Ricketts, 104 John St. N.Y. and Dr. H.R. Correy, U.S. Assayer at New York. You may if you prefer communicate directly with these gentlemen, all of whom are doubtless known to you. I would certainly be willing to engage with Mr. Edison on trial, at the rate of $100.00 per month. I should require more, however, if after a month we might deem a permanent arrangement desirable. I remain, Very respectfully yours Courtney De Kalb
