July 12, 1892.
Mrs. F.J. Coe,
No.51 Howe Street,
New Haven, Conn.
Dear Madame,
With reference to your letter of 7th instant, Mr. Edison considers Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., one of the best schools in this country in which to acquire a knowledge of electrical engineering. Personally, however, Mr. Edison favors the idea of a beginner taking up practical work at the start. In other words, his advice to a young man anxious to become an electrician would be to obtain employment in some electrical manufacturing concern. In Mr. Edison’s opinion the information and experience to be acquired by adopting such a course are of a much more practical and beneficial character than that usually gained by attendance at a school.
Yours truly,
Private Secretary.
