Letterhead: Edison Electric Illuminating CO. Milwaukee, Wisconsin Feb. 20, 1892 Mr. Thomas A. Edison, West Orange, NJ Dear Sir: I have a painter which may be of use to you in this Wall St. fight. You will remember that I was sent off to Chile in a hurry in 1881 to save the Chilean patent on your lamps and system. This I accomplished, making a complete working demonstration of the whole business. The patent was a regular & legal one & was always so recognized by the Chilean government. This patent expired in 1891, ergo, the US. Patent expired at the same time. It cannot be argued in this case that the patent was informal or for something else, on for a trial. It was regular, working patent and was [excruciated?] by one [---] all the completeness of the system. If the U.S. patent was expired, and you only renew for what reason, you make in your hands a [one legible word] club, either to form a new company or to coerce the thanks who are trying to rob you of the [one legible word] of your geniuses. I can give you free data & proof if needed; and in any event my feeble aid & good wishes go with you. Yours Truly, [Signed Stewart, Willis N]
