Title

[LB004064], Letter from Thomas Alva Edison to Western Union, Hamilton McKown Twombly, December 23rd, 1878

Editor's Notes

TAE has proposed to Kinney that if he will come to Menlo to perfect his instrument [autographic] that TAE will furnish him part of TAE's weekly allowance for doing so; reason did not write letter promised was that Green wanted TAE to state price before thing was perfected and TAE could not and was not compelled to do this under contract and would ask a moderate compensation unless proved more difficult in which case it would be more as "no one will set a price on an indefinite amount of labor"; also Green has relations with Andrews who has claim under old contract for portion of autographic devised by TAE--Andrews claim is about $250 and TAE lost his time and Andrews his money on old expts; any patents would be issued to Kinney and TAE and assigned to WU and Andrews would have to sue TAE for his fraudulent claims and not WU; is Walker satisfied that he and Kinney should go ahead as suggested or is he willing to add $25/wk to TAE allowance for Kinney; p.s. [written in TAE hand unlike full letter] that Kinney says in event of perfect success he will take $2000 yearly during life of patent; if thing is success will save WU 3 to 400,000 yearly in wages if not success company will lose several hundred dollars
