[LB005393], Letter from Charles Batchelor to Edward Hibberd Johnson, December 3rd, 1879
Editor's Notes
Edison has just told me about your cable as to chalks. Your troubles are now ended I think and so are ours on telephone-- Three brushfulls of water will not hurt the chalks providing you let them stand thirty six hours before using. Do not try to get the polish by great pressure but by light pressure and long turning-- We can harldy comprehend what you mean by `polarization' inthe Fuller cells-- We use them right along--it may be due to insufficient mercury-- There have been 1000 celss of this battery in use in Chicago now a year and they give not trouble-- Of course the advantage of this battery for our purpose is that it takes up less room-- With 4 cells Watson and 200 ohms some of the annunciator & [drops?] are a little weak when giving closing out signal perhaps you can by some means strengthen then signal by battery at central station [shunt?] in some manner.
