- We have just received from the [Cie] Continentale Edison, blank Powers of atty for Danish patents: also a letter dated June 12th stating that "we were able to deposit in Denmark Continental [sets] 38 and following with provisional powers, but we shall ultimately require origiinal [powers"] &c &c##Now according to the information we have, patents are granted in Denmark for five (5) years only.##Our U.S. patents are not granted on account of the delay occasioned examination in the Patent Office, until after the grant of the foreign patents, and under the law have the [line illegible] with the previous foreign patent which [ex---] [---] you in regard to this point March 11th '82. no patent should be taken for less than fourteen (14) years (the length of the English Patent); and it should be looked to that the grant is for more than 14 yrs. since if a prior foreign patent is granted for a short term and then extended, the U.S. patent will become void at the end of the short term for which the prior foreign patent was granted.##Mr Edison requested me to write you in regard to this matter, since it is of great importance; and he wishes you to make a personal mater of seeing that the mistake is corrected.##The Danish cases should be withdrawn [illegible text] understanding arrived at as to the [----] [course] that will be [persued.]
