[LB011449], Letter from Samuel Insull to George Edward Gouraud, March 15th, 1882

Editor's Notes

Your favor of 2nd came to hand this a.m.& I hasten to reply thereto##The Western Electric Manufacturing Company is a corporation formed under the general State laws of Illinois the liability of its stockholders being limited. It registered office is 220-232 Kinzie Street Chicago Ill. It is now controlled by the National Bell Telephone Coy of Boston.##The Western Electric M.F.G. Coy sent to Australia in accordance with the Contract a Mr Wells who established the Telephone business there. I do not know whether they interested with them the gentlemen mentioned but will endeavour to find out. My impression however is that they did.##One dollar royalty means one dollar for each complete instrument & not two##No formal agreement (as provided for in Memorandum 17th Jany 80) has ever been executed.##I wrote the Western Electric Co on 27th Feby asking them for an account of Royalties &c but have not so far received any reply. I have today written suggesting that they should give their attention to the matter.##I do not in this connection know any businesses in Australia the people Mr Edison has to deal with being the Western Electric Co here. They have never been formally notified of the assignment of Mr Edisons rights under the memorandum of 17th January 80, to the Oriental Company but in conversation with their representative, Mr. Wells, I have often referred to Mr Edison having sold his rights to the Oriental Company We cannot very well formally notify the W. E. M. Co. until the formal assignment to the Oriental Coy has been made.##I notice messrs Renshaw refers to the Assignment of the Patents to the Oriental Coy. It has always been Mr Edison understanding that all he [need] assign is the right to receive royalty from the W. E. M. Co under his Agreement with them.##So soon as the W E. M. Co reply to my letter to them of this date I will write you again
