[LB016273], Letter from Samuel Insull to George Harrison Bliss, May 7th, 1883

Editor's Notes

Your favor of the 30th. ult. Governing draft for [$13.54] came duly to hand for which accept my thanks. With reference to the matter of collections and your objection to the prompt manner in which the Machine Works applied to you for funds, I have submitted what you say to Mr. Edison and he desires me to state that he does not think that your company ought to regard the Machine Works from a business point of view merely. Mr. Edison started those works with the idea of rendering the Edison companies facilities in connection with manufacturing and it is admitted by all that if he had not done so our business would be in a very different position at the present time. He has not the necessary capital to allow of the Machine Works giving such credit as you intimate they should do. When the business gets more firmy established and the works are making reasonable profits Mr. Edison will be only to willing to give you the time which you say you get from other people. I would further remind you that a dynamo machine is not an ordinary article of manufacture and if you were dealing with outside people you would be compelled to give your orders well in advance of your requirements and, considering the special character of the work, to make arrrangements for advances during the building of such machines, whereas we are in the habit of supplying you with dynamos just when you require them and in this way we really do give you more than 30 days time as we have to carry considerable stock in order to be able to fill your orders when you call for machines. I think if you look carefully into this matter you will see that there is hardly ground for the complaint you make against the Edison machine works. I would have replied to your letter before this but have been absent from town for some days.
